Amanda Fuller: Registered Organ Donor

Being an organ donor is something I have felt very strongly about since my Dad passed away in 2004. I’m not sure why his death prompted this particular feeling as he was not in need of any form of transplant, nor could any organ donation save his life, yet nevertheless, since then I have wanted to officially register to become an organ donor.

I thought I was already registered as a donor as I had ticked the box on my driver’s license form and I thought that was enough. It’s not. If you wish to be an official organ donor you must actually register with Medicare. So last week I officially registered!

It feels pretty amazing to know that if something were to happen to me, that someone in desperate need could be helped by my donation. I may be able to change someone’s life forever, without even knowing them!

Interestingly enough in the week that has followed there has been a lot of talk in the media about organ donation and how the number of donors has increased etc. It’s funny how these things all tend to happen at once.

If you are interested in finding out more about being a donor, or you thought you were already covered by your driver’s license but just found out your aren’t, you can get all the info at the┬áDonate Life website.

OH and if you DO register as a donor, PLEASE make sure your closest family members know your wishes, because in the end they are given the final yes or no, and if they don’t know how you feel your wishes might not be carried out.
